About Max
I established Max Cohen Therapy Services in 1993 to offer private counselling and psychotherapy to individuals and couples. The formation of Oakfield Associates followed to provide clinical supervision, group facilitation, bespoke training, coaching and consultation services to organisations and individuals.
I founded The Integrated Practice with psychiatrists Dr Judith Mohring and Dr James Kustow in 2017. It had been a long term ambition to open a practice integrating; psychiatry, psychology, psychotherapy and counselling with coaching, nutrition, microbiome analysis, energy therapies, cranial sacral therapy, massage and meditation, delivered by carefully chosen and respected colleagues.
I have been practicing as a psychotherapist and counsellor for over 30 years and have so far helped more than two thousand people. I work with people experiencing chronic stress, anxiety, depression, complex trauma and PTSD, addictions and co-occurring disorders, codependency, relationship difficulties, as well as with the often ignored partners of addicts or alcoholics.
Life is often messy and complicated. I believe in creating a therapy to meet every individual’s needs. These vary from person to person and also change over time. Psychotherapy, in my view needs to encompass our biological, psychological, cultural and social dynamics.
How do I work?
I adopt a broadly integrative style of therapy which is an eclectic mix of psychodynamic and person centred models of therapy this includes elements of cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, solution focused therapy and complimentary therapies and coaching. I hold an advanced qualification in EMDR and utilise EFT (tapping), mindfulness and relaxation tools in my practice.
I like to work in a pragmatic and collaborative way seeking to develop authenticity and transparency, emphasising emotional and social engagement.. My goal is to support people to take responsibility for themselves through a spirit of empathic enquiry, exploration and acceptance.
Clinical Supervision
I supervise the clinical work of a handful of psychiatrists, therapists and counsellors.
Organisations I have consulted for
The Priory Hospital Roehampton, Cottonwood (USA), Sierra Tuscon (USA)
Visiting Lecturer
For ten years I lectured, supervised and facilitated personal development groups for post graduate psychology students at a London university.
